CIHTTF Revamp Meeting November 2025

The HTRL have working with the Legal Aid Society Office in Decatur to revamp and revive the Central Illinois Human Trafficking Task Force. We sent out a survey in September looking for feedback. Then based on the fact that the vast majority of the respondents wanted to continue the task force and saw value in continuing the work we scheduled the first meeting in 2025. Due to staff turnover and the non-renewal of the federal grant we are working as a volunteer task force so no one had stepped up to take up the work to try and organize a meeting since December 2024.

We decided that Legal Aid Society would run the meetings and the HTRL would run the logistics so we set the agenda and my student Cassidy took the meeting minutes. We had a few technical difficulties trying to change the meeting from Teams to Zoom because after you send a meeting invite I couldn't change the link but most people were able to come over to the Zoom meeting. We compiled and presented the results from the survey and worked to review the CIHTTF Mission and Accomplishments. Then we had sign up for subcommittees, update on the laws and Shared Hope rankings and an open share for anyone to announce any events or news. We had over 30 attendees and I think it was a great start to revitalizing the CIHTTF which started back in 2017. Our next meeting will be hybrid in March hopefully hosted at Millikin University.

We just wrapped up our fifth annual Human Trafficking Awareness Month panel discussion at Millikin University and the event was a huge success. Around 40 students, faculty, staff and community members came out before the big snow storm to learn about the intersections of human trafficking education and training. We hosted Matthew Fuller, Human Trafficking Training Specialist at the Center for Prevention of Abuse in Peoria, Cindy Kuro, Prevention Educator from the Set Free Movement-Macon County, and Cheris Larson, Program Manager at Project OZ in Bloomington. The panel discussion focused on the educational opportunities, prevailing pedagogies on human trafficking, challenges to teaching about this hidden crime, and how to combat disinformation through learning opportunities. The Human Trafficking Research Lab (HTRL) at Millikin University was established in 2018 to transform undergraduate performance learning projects into cutting edge human trafficking research. The HTRL team at Millikin University conducts policy relevant research on human trafficking within the United States and internationally.
