2026 Federal Human Trafficking Policy Priorities: Let the Data Speak

Human Trafficking Prevention Month is always an interesting time to learn more about the topic and this year there are several webinars which are free to attend and related to policy advocacy or data. Today, I attended a discussion on "2026 Federal Human Trafficking Policy Priorities: Let the Data Speak" sponsored by Polaris and Allies Against Slavery focused on three key federal bills: Trafficking Survivors Relief Act, Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act, and the National Human Trafficking Database Act. It was interesting to learn more about the policy gaps in prosecution, services, and national coordination especially in data compilation on the federal level. We received legislative summaries for all of the bills and advocacy talking points with the key goals of the bills. I was most interested in learning about Florida's SB 7064 adopted in 2023, which created a Statewide Data Repository for Anonymous Human Trafficking Data at the University of South Florida. Two other states Texas and Oklahoma have recently adopted similar bills and I will be looking into ways to bring this legislation to Illinois.

We just wrapped up our fifth annual Human Trafficking Awareness Month panel discussion at Millikin University and the event was a huge success. Around 40 students, faculty, staff and community members came out before the big snow storm to learn about the intersections of human trafficking education and training. We hosted Matthew Fuller, Human Trafficking Training Specialist at the Center for Prevention of Abuse in Peoria, Cindy Kuro, Prevention Educator from the Set Free Movement-Macon County, and Cheris Larson, Program Manager at Project OZ in Bloomington. The panel discussion focused on the educational opportunities, prevailing pedagogies on human trafficking, challenges to teaching about this hidden crime, and how to combat disinformation through learning opportunities. The Community Assessment for the Central Illinois Human Trafficking Task Force is completed and available to read here .   The Human Trafficking Research Lab at Millikin would like to thank all the Central Illinois Human Trafficking Task Force members who took time to fill out this survey and provide a valuable evaluation for the future of the task force.
