Reflections on Working in the Lab Fall 2025

This past semester, I have enjoyed the opportunity to work at Millikin's Human Trafficking Research Lab. During my time here, I have connected with professionals from several different fields and been introduced to an intricate web of individuals dedicated to fighting human trafficking. One of my favorite opportunities has been taking minutes for meetings of the Illinois Human Trafficking Task Force and witnessing their activism in action. 

Currently, we are working on a research project that seeks to link media portrayals of trafficking victims to successful human trafficking legislation, or lack thereof. I have extensively researched and written up narratives on the human trafficking-related laws in Missouri and Illinois as the groundwork of the project. Next, we will compile newspapers from each of these states and compare the language used to portray victims of human trafficking with the state’s legislation. Then, we will determine whether or not the media has influenced the passage of effective legislation to fight human trafficking.

We just wrapped up our fifth annual Human Trafficking Awareness Month panel discussion at Millikin University and the event was a huge success. Around 40 students, faculty, staff and community members came out before the big snow storm to learn about the intersections of human trafficking education and training. We hosted Matthew Fuller, Human Trafficking Training Specialist at the Center for Prevention of Abuse in Peoria, Cindy Kuro, Prevention Educator from the Set Free Movement-Macon County, and Cheris Larson, Program Manager at Project OZ in Bloomington. The panel discussion focused on the educational opportunities, prevailing pedagogies on human trafficking, challenges to teaching about this hidden crime, and how to combat disinformation through learning opportunities. Community Assessment for the Central Illinois Human Trafficking Task Force

The Community Assessment for the Central Illinois Human Trafficking Task Force is completed and available to read here .   The Human Trafficking Research Lab at Millikin would like to thank all the Central Illinois Human Trafficking Task Force members who took time to fill out this survey and provide a valuable evaluation for the future of the task force. We would especially like to thank Sara Sefried and Matt Fuller and other Steering Committee members who provided valuable feedback in the pretest versions of the community assessment survey. The survey was administered in Qualtrics and we would like to thank Linda Collinsworth and the Behavioral Sciences Department at Millikin University for their assistance gaining access to this software. About the Lab

The Human Trafficking Research Lab (HTRL) at Millikin University was established in 2018 to transform undergraduate performance learning projects into cutting edge human trafficking research. The HTRL team at Millikin University conducts policy relevant research on human trafficking within the United States and internationally. We are the only undergraduate research lab focused on human trafficking in the state of Illinois and one of a handful in the entire United States, making this applied research experience truly unique for Millikin students.
