Adjudication Article Revision Submitted

I finally submitted the revisions for our adjudication article! I wanted to get it done before school started last week but since I am new and developing a new course my syllabus preparation took longer than anticipated pushing the revisions to this article back. Still I am happy to move my post-it on my publication board from revise and resubmit to under review again. Hopefully after the second round of revisions this article will be accepted. 

While I was working on the revisions an interesting story was published in the local news media Macon County woman says justice denied in trafficking case which highlighted how human trafficking cases are charged and adjudicated for lesser sentences in Central Illinois. This case is exactly the type of case our research focuses on in Central Illinois. Police charged a variety of offenses including domestic battery, promoting prostitution, sexual assault, felon in possession of a weapon and breaking and entering. Then the case was pled to lower statutes by the states attorney including promoting prostitution, domestic battery and unlawful possession of a weapon. The defendant received credit for time served, will serve his sentences concurrently, and will be eligible for parole in November 2027. The article features an interview with the victim/survivor and it is definitely worth your time to read/watch her reaction to the plea deal and adjudication process.

I was invited to speak with the Golden K Kiwanis Club of Decatur about the Human Trafficking Research Lab, our student faculty collaborative research, and trafficking due to Russia's war in Ukraine. Their focus is on children and I discussed the different types of trafficking vulnerabilities that we see in child trafficking cases, how US human trafficking law has special caveats for child trafficking, and then the different types of trafficking that are found in Ukraine. It was a lot to cover in 20 mins but the audience asked some interesting questions and I was able to meet a few retired Millikin professors. Human Trafficking Awareness Month Panel Discussion on Education

We just wrapped up our fifth annual Human Trafficking Awareness Month panel discussion at Millikin University and the event was a huge success. Around 40 students, faculty, staff and community members came out before the big snow storm to learn about the intersections of human trafficking education and training. We hosted Matthew Fuller, Human Trafficking Training Specialist at the Center for Prevention of Abuse in Peoria, Cindy Kuro, Prevention Educator from the Set Free Movement-Macon County, and Cheris Larson, Program Manager at Project OZ in Bloomington. The panel discussion focused on the educational opportunities, prevailing pedagogies on human trafficking, challenges to teaching about this hidden crime, and how to combat disinformation through learning opportunities.
